TV Review: SMALLVILLE - SEASON EIGHT - 'Turbulence'

SMALLVILLE is trying to pick up the pieces from that horrible Lana (Kristin Kreuk) detour. Last week saw the return of Lois (Erica Durance) and Davis (Sam Witwer), and this week we finally see Jimmy (Aaron Ashmore) in the final stages of his recovery after his encounter with Doomsday. We also see the continuing evolution of Clark (Tom Welling) into Superman as he and Tess (Cassidy Freeman) find themselves inside a plane that is about to crash.

I’m not sure if I liked “Turbulence”. In fact, I’m not sure if I’ve liked SMALLVILLE ever since “Bulletproof.” Since that episode, we’ve seen nothing but bad writing followed by a filler episode. I suppose I’m a little jaded still, but it seems as if the maturity of the SMALLVILLE dropped just when it was getting good. I feel a little jerked around and insulted by what has transpired the past few weeks. In the end, it really does come down to Lana and the fact that her character felt so forced.

I’m not fooling myself here; SMALLVILLE was never intended to be an adult drama. But darn it if I thought the prospect of Clark emerging from his high school years and entering the final leg of his transformation into Superman pretty fascinating. In the earlier episodes of season eight, you really saw the pieces falling together as to why Clark eventually donned the red cape.
