Amanda Counts knew when she took over as Madison's girls' lacrosse coach in 2007 that invigorating the program would take time. The team's record over her first two seasons -- three wins two years ago and six wins last season-- confirmed that.
But the Warhawks appear to be on the right track these days, and much quicker than expected. Their 6-0 start, best in school history, initially seemed surreal to Counts, as if talking about it in anything louder than a whisper might make everything vanish.
"I'm a little nervous," Counts said laughing. "But it's just been amazing to watch. All of the things me and my coaches have been saying the previous seasons took a while to be trusted. It's hard to make a team believe before they've won."
The Warhawks are now firm believers, and Friday's 10-7 road win over previously unbeaten Stone Bridge only bolstered their confidence. Entering last night's matchup against Liberty District rival W.T. Woodson, Madison had outscored its opponents 101-36. lost
Counts gave several reasons for the turnaround but emphasized her players' poise on offense. In past seasons, the Warhawks did all the necessary work to get within shooting range, only to hesitate. This year they're relentless in their attack.
